The Complete List of National Parks + Printable for 2024
Ever since President Theodore Roosevelt laid the cornerstone of the Roosevelt Arch in 1903, the words “for the enjoyment and benefit of the people” have welcomed visitors to Yellowstone National Park. Those eight words have become a mantra of sorts for park lovers everywhere.
Currently, the list of national parks (USA) includes 429 units, with 63 named national parks and the parks cover more than 85 million acres in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and United States territories. As you can see, we definitely enjoy our national parks!

Making a List of National Parks
As an avid park and public lands lover, I’m on a quest to visit as many national park units as I can. One of the things that has helped me do that is checking the location of parks on the national park service website before I travel and road trip.
That way I can make sure not the miss a park unit even when I’m just passing through. Especially if it’s a remote area that’s difficult to visit. On one of my very first road trips I missed Devils Tower in Wyoming. And I was so close, too. I just knew I wouldn’t make it back to that isolated area but I finally did a couple of years ago.
Also, utilizing Google Maps to search and save parks to a list is helpful as well. Google has no limit on lists (that I’m aware of) so you can make and save lists for just about anything or anywhere. My Google account is filled with saved places, parks and restaurants around the country that I hope to visit one day.
Although, these digital tools are helpful, sometimes you just want a piece of paper – a checklist of the national parks you plan to visit or have visited. So, I put together this national park list printable (below) or savable PDF. It’s nothing fancy, just a simple list that includes parks with the national park designation. However, further down in the article you will find a complete list (not-printable) of all the national parks by state.
National Parks List
As of 2024, there are 63 parks with a national park designation. What does that even mean? What does it take to be a national park? The National Park Service states that overall there are 3 criteria that must be met. To be eligible it must:
- Possess nationally significant natural, cultural, or recreational resources.
- Be a suitable and feasible addition to the National Park System
- Require direct NPS management instead of protection by some other government agency or by the private sector. Source: NPS
